Coding with Plants

Taigh Chearsabhagh Trust

Description We are an arts and heritage organisation on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides.
We recently set up a project to deliver digital skills training in North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist. After school code clubs, coding classes for adults in Python and Javascript, Coder Dojos, collaborations with local organisations and working with local developers to create a program of tech based work placements for young people.

As part of the arts program at Taigh Chearsabhagh artist Laura Donkers is proposing to work with growers from the network of community polycrubs in Uist to produce an exhibition. The environment in the Outer Hebrides is unique and offers extremes that are not often visited on the rest of the British isles.

Our proposal is to use Arduino chips to gather real time data about polycrubs: humidity, temp etc, and create a web app to structure and display the information.

The unique aspect to the project would be to align technology with the specific local environment, use the internet of things to offer a resource to connect to the project beyond the local context and show computation and process as aligned with the natural world.
